Beware misleading headlines about passwords…

Here’s what the headlines say:

* PASSWORDS, SECURITY PROTOCOLS COST MORE THAN THEY SAVE, SAYS MICROSOFT RESEARCHER

ZDNet (blog)

* MICROSOFT: CHANGING PASSWORDS ISN’T WORTH THE EFFORT

PC Magazine

So based on these headlines…

…should we all just stop worrying about passwords?

Absolutely not!

In fact, the research being cited in these headlines is IMPORTANT, but MISUNDERSTOOD…

Apple removes Microsoft from threat list???

So far, April has been quite a month for the world of tech:

* Saturday, April 3: Apple releases iPad

* Thursday, April 8: Apple unveils iPhone 4.0

* Sunday, April 11: Palm is said to be up for sale to the highest bidder…

…and presumably, this is in response to the continued successful of iPhone and lack of success for the Palm Pre and Pixi.

* Monday, April 12: Best Buy announces it will sell the Barnes & Noble e-reader, called “The Nook”…

…and presumably, this is in response to the successful release of iPad, which is also an e-reader.

* Monday, April 12: Google unveils dramatic new changes to its online office suite called Google Docs…

…and presumably, this is in response to the successful release of iPad, which offers its own office suite.

* Monday, April 12: Microsoft unveils a new line of mobile phones called “Kin”…

…and presumably, this is in response to the continued successful of iPhone.

But there’s been one more piece of news about Apple this month that is perhaps the most OVERLOOKED, and also the most DRAMATIC:

iPad: Will it ruin your life???

Believe it or not, there is still is something to say about the Apple iPad, and this is it:

* If you are happily married, DON’T BUY one of these devices

* If you want your kids to do well in school, DON’T BUY one of these devices

* If you enjoy living in the real world vs. living in a virtual world, DON’T BUY one of these devices

There I said it.

And I think it’s important to say, because this thing is as addictive as crack cocaine…

Obligatory pre-launch iPad post

Yes, it really happened to me this past weekend.

My wife and I were talking about some aspect of her work and I found myself saying:

“Maybe you should think about getting an iPad.”

It was shocking really…

…because until that moment, I could see no obvious use for the thing.

But I think that’s the way it’s going to be for a lot of people…

which is why I offer this obligatory pre-launch iPad post with questions people are sure to be asking:

iPad: Kiss of life — or death — for Kindle???

Politics, they say, makes strange bedfellows.

And so does business…

…especially the technology business.

Case in point:

* Amazon.com and their Kindle e-book reader

* The new iPad from Apple, which is also an e-book reader

And here’s what makes the two devices strange bedfellows:

* On one hand, many in the tech world believe the new iPad will crush and destroy Amazon’s Kindle…

* …but on the other hand, Amazon just announced that it’s developed a Kindle App for the iPad that, frankly, may offer a better reading experience on the iPad than you can get on the actual Kindle.

Confused?

Don’t feel bad about it…it’s VERY confusing.

iPad…best new toy for your bedroom???

Is there a limit to where you want technology showing up in your life?

For instance, is the bedroom somewhere you want it to go?

The reason I ask is that many people say the way they relax at the end of the day before going to sleep is to kick back in bed and…

* …watch TV

* …or read a book.

But are devices like the Apple iPad threatening to change all that?

Let’s talk about how tablets devices like these may change the way you end your day:

What we can learn from PleaseRobMe.com…

Sometimes we FALL IN LOVE with what technology can DO…

…but we don’t always STOP TO CONSIDER ALL THE CONSEQUENCES of doing it.

For instance:

In the last few years, millions and millions of people…

…have fallen in love with using Facebook and Twitter (and more recently, Google Buzz) on their mobile phones.

But every time we use our mobile phones to send messages over Facebook or Twitter about WHERE WE ARE and WHAT WE’RE DOING…

…what we’re also doing is announcing to the world that we’re NOT AT HOME.

And is this REALLY such a SMART thing to be doing?

To drive home the point that it’s really quite FOOLISH…

…a couple of young guys have created a new website called “PleaseRobMe.com.”

And even though these three guys meant PleaseRobMe.com as a SPOOF…

…here are some very good lessons we can all learn from it:
